Artist Statement
My work is primarily influenced by the literature that I interacted with as a child. My mother took my siblings and I to the public library at least once a week and with each visit, I would return home with a towering stack of brightly illustrated picture books. I would spend hours perusing the artwork in each book, tracing the lines of printed pen with my small fingers. As I grew up, the colors and expressive line work from those books began to make an appearance in my own artistic style.
Drawing inspiration from my own life and experience, I enjoy creating work that is somewhat autobiographical. At times, my reality-based settings are sprinkled with personified animal characters- reminiscent of the children’s stories I always felt so drawn to.
There are also consistent themes of stars, the ocean, and trees present in my work as these were
my most vibrant nature fascinations as a child. Stargazing in the backyard, afternoons in the park, and trips to the beach in Mexico to visit my grandparents.
I am primarily drawn to 2D mediums, preferring painting, drawing, and photography. With photography, I enjoy capturing the world plainly through my own perspective. When it comes to pen and paper, however, my perception is much more exaggerated in the final outcome. Small details often become dramatized or altered in order to fit my idea of a specific work. The purpose of my practice aims to cultivate a wider understanding towards the importance of intentional attention. I want to slow down acknowledge the seemingly unremarkable, and in turn, find everything remarkable.
